Dolby ATMOS is the new surround sound format that is taking the industry by storm. For once you do not have to tend an ear to listen to its effect. The listener is immediately immersed in the soundscape. Basically, Dolby ATMOS is based on the well-established surround 5.1 set-ups, add two side loudspeakers and a couple on the ceiling pointing down and you have yourself a Dolby ATMOS playback system. The clincher is since the metadata knows the loudspeaker set-up where it was mixed, and the loudspeaker set-up where it is being played back, Dolby ATMOS takes care of the conversion. Being object driven, the loudspeaker count is not important, it can be mixed in any configuration and still have an immersive experience just like the original intent.
