Far better than expected and having a lot to like about it

Arriving at a friend's house, a group of friends gather together to try to hold a party to help him get over their relatives' recent passing, but when they uncover evidence of his attempts at raising an embalmed body from the dead, they must find a way of stopping it from happening.

This was a fairly solid and somewhat enjoyable genre effort. One of the finer features with this one stems from the impressive atmosphere that comes about from a generally chilling and intriguing storyline. The idea of the group meeting up for the celebrations to help their friend get over a relative's death and slowly discover the hints that he was involved in black magic and the occult from all the paraphernalia in his possession strewn around the house only to uncover the truth about what he was trying to do makes for an intriguing enough setup to get them over to the house and start looking into the strange objects left behind. By the time the dead body is found embalmed in perfect condition in the house in a gruesome state to undergo a special preservation service, this one manages to bring about the kind of intriguing storyline to ramp up the tension, to go along with the kind of overbearing presence that runs throughout the house. That finally comes to a head in the second half when it finally brings about the series of outward clues about the black magic goings-on in the house. Realizing the attempt at bringing them together was a way of bringing them into the conspiracy to bring her body back to life by unleashing the murderous spirit upon the group and trapping them in a dangerous other realm while it knocked off the rest, it offers a solid series of stalking scenes that focus on the chilling image of the figure going around and appearing to the group before taking them out. While it's a bit unfortunate that none of the kills here are bloody or graphic, this makes fine use of the supernatural powers on display to set up the fun finale, where it uses the gained knowledge of the occult to finally find a way of defeating the spirit and stopping its mission. This is energetic enough to be of some fun throughout here and uses the low budget to its best mark, which all gives this one a lot more to like than expected. There are some issues here that bring this one down. The biggest issue here is the abject and outright refusal to go along with any of the male characters in the film for what they present as supposedly good ideas. There are plenty of occasions where they simply go against common sense or any kind of self-preservation in the situation solely for the sake of keeping themselves in danger. While the film passes it off as a form of spectral skepticism, there's a sense of stupidity in trying to pass off the kind of encounters here as anything more than the inability to get to safety out of the house away from a dead body and black magic paraphernalia strewn around the property which is stupidity masquerading as stoic heroism in this case. With this also managing to provide a series of dragging sequences in the first half trying to spend far too much time pointing out the obvious to someone stuck in their ways to accept the truth for no reason than enhancing the running time, the pacing to this one is off at times with when it decides to introduce the murderous spirit, and alongside the obvious cheapness of everything here manage to bring this down the most.
