Having helmed WET RAINBOW, one of the finest crossover pictures of the XXX Golden Age, director "Duddy Kane" went on to make only one more sex film - the now long-forgotten VAMPIRE LUST.

A supposed "satire" with no coherent point, LUST seems to throw as much as it can at the wall to see what will stick. Vladimir Lenin, in actuality a vampire, emerges from the ocean encased in rubber with his vampire bride to stalk the streets of New York, looking for a trio of victims he can use in a resurrection orgy to bring about the rise of "sexual vampirism." Setting their sights on the bride's mute granddaughter and her quirky family, the bride begins supposedly trying to seduce them, though in actually everyone just kind of runs around doing whatever.

WET RAINBOW isn't perfect, but it's a fairly well constructed portrait of an erotic triangle between a professor, his artist wife, and his sexually precocious hippie student. VAMPIRE LUST, by contrast, is a mess, feeling like a three-car pile-up between a student film, DRACULA (THE DIRTY OLD MAN) and PSYCHED BY THE 4D WITCH. The film has competing narrations, one by Lenin and the other his mute granddaughter, which leads to alternating headaches as the vocal track switches between the sub-Henny Youngman borscht belt BS of DRACULA and the braindead erotic cooing of WITCH. In between, people run amok through New York's Grand Central Station, down the street as they annoy confused passers-by, and Vlad jacks off from a rooftop ledge, splattering some poor lady below with his vampire cum.

Whatever attempts the film seems to think it's making as satire were lost on me - it's nothing but a collection of Intro. To Poly Sci referents in search of meaning. The film points out several times that the "vampire" at its center is Vladimir Lenin and gives him a goofy Russian accent, but that's the extent of it - whatever this character has to do with the real Lenin or geopolitics more broadly is a mystery, as is why he's dressed like the guy at the end of O FANTASMA (is it to block the sun? Because they couldn't find anyone who looked remotely like Vladimir Lenin? The mind boggles). There are a few digs at pop lifestyle trends, with Lenin remarking that if things like Scientology can take off, surely America is ready for "sexual vampirism," but whatever the hell that even is is left largely unexplored, with the few rules we are given seemingly made up on the spot and just as quickly forgotten.

Some scattershot gross-out material, like the aforementioned rooftop ejaculation or the mute protagonist's narration constantly remarking on what family member she's lusting after / having sex with at least register as anarchic in the manner of the best early porn, but over all this is a mess: ambitious, with good cinematography and at least complicated (if not always effective) editing, but to no end. A statement film in search of a statement, it's no wonder it sank like a stone after being taken from director Kane by the Mafia.
