Despite the title, Boy Makes Girl isn't about a kid - it's about a socially awkward, highly intelligent man in his 40s who's deep into coding and software development. Instead of building the next big tech startup, he decides to create a humanoid robot modeled after his former therapist.

Right off the bat, I had questions.

Even assuming he's brilliant, the level of robotics he pulls off from what looks like a garage setup is ambitious, to say the least. We're talking fully functioning, emotionally responsive, human-looking android. For one guy without a visible lab, advanced equipment, or industrial setup, it's a stretch. You definitely have to suspend disbelief early and just roll with it.

That said, the story itself was actually pretty well written. The strongest part of the film was the character development. Watching him struggle socially, go on awkward dates, form relationships, and slowly grow emotionally gave the movie some heart. By the end, there's clear growth, and that arc felt genuine.

One thing that stood out - and not subtly - was the repeated NRA references. It comes up multiple times, and each time it's very clear the writers are anti-gun. On one date, the second he says he works for the NRA, she immediately shuts him down, basically treating him like he's a bad person. Later, when he mentions it again, another character blurts out, "Is that a threat?" And near the end of the movie, he announces he quit working for the NRA because "guns kill people." It felt forced. The references didn't advance the plot or deepen his character - they just sat there as commentary. And it's like... if you're a techie, coding, robotics kind of guy, what exactly are you doing at the NRA? We never find out. He worked for NASA - that makes sense. He later gets a job at a robotics lab - that makes sense. But the NRA? That felt thrown in purely to push a "we don't like guns" narrative, and it stuck out in a way that didn't feel organic to the story.

Overall, it was a decent watch. I didn't skip to the end - which, for a casual streaming pick, says something. I wouldn't watch it again, but I wasn't bored either. The emotional growth and relationship development were the highlights. The tech premise required some suspension of disbelief, and the messaging felt heavy-handed at times, but it was still a solid one-time watch.
