The Storm

This marks the first time in the series that snow has been present. Chief Content Officer, Scott M. Gimple, expressed his excitement about this because it is something that he had wanted for years. In 18 Miles Out (2012), Shane and Rick share a short conversation about how they should prepare for the winter. It was asked on Talking Dead's 18 Miles Out (2012) if there would ever be snow in the show. Special Effects Supervisor Greg Nicotero explained that he would very much like to include a winter theme in the show, but it would be too complicated to create in terms of using sets with snow and creating frozen and icy walkers.

During the scene where they cross the frozen river a completely intact bridge which they could have used can be seen just a few meters down the river in multiple shots.
