A chilling blizzard of feminist fury, turning subjugation into a grim symphony.

Not a long-overdue appreciation, but a potent one nonetheless, for one of Ursula Reuter Christiansen's most powerful works: Skarpretteren aka The Executioner (1973). Her previous film, Three Girls and a Pig (1972), is something I still hate-a truly bad film with terrible taste.

While I sent my birthday wishes to Christiansen online on February 13th, sharing a review on IMDb, this one slipped through the cracks. Still, better late than never.

I was thinking about one of my favorite films, Helma Sanders-Brahms's Heinrich (1977), when I decided to watch "Skarpretteren," and what a good decision that was. This Danish short film, only 35 minutes long, is far more than its short runtime suggests. It's full of meaning and an unsettling beauty, a mix of art and music that is both grim and hopeful. The narration and score, despite being brief, stay with you long after the film ends.

The film's soundscape-a mix of cold, harsh, and even strange musical notes-feels like being in an endless snowstorm, a metaphor for the main character's tough life. Christiansen made a very personal film, looking at the bitter experience of a woman who is used and mistreated. We follow her on the windy Danish island of Møn, where superstitious men take advantage of the vulnerable.

Ultimately, "Skarpretteren" is almost a nihilistic feminist sci-fi look at a world where women face misogyny from both inside and out. It's a rare work that goes beyond simple metaphors, using its hauntingly beautiful music to amplify its message about the oppression of women.
