Prior to filming the neo-Western drama, series creator Taylor Sheridan required key cast members to complete a four-day "cowboy camp" mule-packing trip in the mountains to develop authentic riding, roping, and ranching skills. Kevin Costner and Kelly Reilly were exempted from the excursion, as Costner already possessed extensive equestrian experience and Reilly's character refuses to go near horses.

Goofs
When John Dutton and Lee Dutton are helping the cow birth her calf, Lee pulls the calf out, the men stand, and both cow and calf get up and run. This is not how that works. The cow and calf would just lay there, recovering. A calf cannot stand that soon after birth, plus the placenta would still be attached.
