If I had not endured 5 episodes of this series, I could have fallen into episode 6 and been swept up in the drama of it, as I should have been from the get-go.

This episode rightly distributes the storylines between all the principal actors instead of just focusing on "Shaun Murphy" (Freddie Highmore) and his peculiar set of distinctions (autism and being a savant).

When Shaun is used as a supporting character, his quirks/conditions can almost be forgiven/explained, but when he is the main focus, they cannot be.

People/patients require split-second decisions, and they also require that doctors convey sympathy and be empathetic. They do not want to be talked at or talked down to or dismissed or treated in any other way that makes them feel more uncomfortable than they already feel.

But Shaun is almost entirely unable to convey any human emotion and as such he is not someone who we can easily identify with. I understand that the show wanted to showcase such a character/situation/conditions, and they do so well, but if you or your loved one had to undergo surgery, and if Shaun Murphy was your doctor, and could not provide you with the appropriate response or with any response, except a blunt one and/or sometimes a delayed one -- how could you have confidence that he would be the best person to assist you?

Maybe that is the point of the show, I don't know--to challenge our preconceived notions of doctors.

At any rate, this episode was fast-paced and dramatic, and filled with big moments, so it' rates higher on the charts.
