Tribute to Micro-Budget filmmaker Michael J. Murphy

This appears to be a duplicate entry of the three separate parts of this tribute to Michael J. Murphy, which I have already reviewed so I'm putting a full, combined review here as well.

This was the very last thing I had left to watch on the Michael J. Murphy box set and I left it until the end purposefully, as it was made by those who worked with and loved Michael, shortly after he passed away plus a part which was made more recently. It's split in to three segments of about 20 minutes, across 3 discs, in the box set.

It's a nice documentary with brief interviews from Phil Lyndon, Judith Holding, Patrick Olliver, June Bunday and Stephen Longhurst, who appeared in the earlier films. There are also some interview snippets with Michael, talking about his career and in his garden with Phil & Patrick, not long after his final film 'The Return Of Alan Strange' was made and, very shortly, before his death.

The final segment is interviews with a selection of younger, newer low-budget filmmakers, who have been influenced my Michael and his films, although they didn't know him personally. This part didn't work as well for me.

What I would very much have liked is longer interviews with the people who worked with him the most, who were also many of his closest friends, from the Am-Dram scene near to where he lived. The brief snippets we get show how moved and upset they were with his passing. Unfortunately we get nothing from early regulars Caroline Aylward or Carol Aston, who were in so many of his films and that's a shame. Perhaps they had moved on with their lives and had lost touch with him, perhaps they didn't want to appear, but I think it would have been a much more authentic tribute had as many people as possible been interviewed.

All I want to say, finally, is thank you Michael J. Murphy, for a wonderful legacy of films, films which will definitely be watched again in this house. R. I. P.
