When Jane is quizzing Alba (while Alba is helping Xo recover from surgery) and helping her study for the US citizenship test she asks Alba is Puerto Rico is a state to which Alba says "No, it is a commonwealth, an unincorporated territory." And then asks in Spanish why they get taxed? To which Jane says "That's right!" And Alba gives Jane a high five and then Xo a high five. This is a genuine high five between the actresses since all three of the actresses who play the Villanueva women are Puerto Rican (even though their characters are from Venezuela or of Venezuelan descent. Gina Rodriguez (Jane) is from Chicago but of Puerto Rican descent, Andrea Navedo (Xo) is from New York but of Puerto Rican descent and Ivonne Coll is from the island of Puerto Rico.
