"Beds Are Burning" (1987) by the Australian alternative rock band Midnight Oil is arguably one of the most successfully subversive artistic gestures in music history. Released as the second single from their landmark sixth studio album, Diesel and Dust, the track achieved the near-impossible: it packaged a fierce, uncompromising demand for Indigenous land rights into an infectious, arena-ready pop-rock hit that conquered global music charts.
