Hidden facts about the Soviet space program and its problems

A peculiar fact that during the space race between U. S. and USSR we're often told about the failures and tragedies occured with the American program, but the Soviet program is always something that was kept under secrecy, a clear refusal in addressing problems or admitting failures. What always struck me as suspicious was the early death of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin a few years after being the first man sent to the outer space - but he died in a plane crash.

"The Soyuz Conspiracy" proves that the Comunist program wasn't all that perfect and a few notorious events were amazingly hidden from public view, and among them the death of cosmonaut Colonel Vladimir Komarov, a friend of Gagarin, and the first casualty on board of a spacecraft. The documentary follows the government coverup on his death, and also exposes another military figure (don't remember the name) whose commitment to prevent possible failures on the Russian space program kept him stone-walled in discredit and disagrace. That other man died in a bizarre accident, a return to flying after years of being denied entry on a plane due to his countless complaints about issues with a Soyuz spacecraft, a huge embarassment to the Kremlin people as they had a goal and a deadline that couldn't be delayed, and costly modifications om the ship they thought wasn't necessary.

It's almost like a prescient of Challenger, the American spaceship that exploded in front of millions of people, an image that haunts us for 40 years (on this exact date as I write this, by the way), and the similarity comes in that the bureacrats in charge were tired of delaying release, which costs plenty, the ship wasn't 100% good and couldn't deal with extreme freezing temperatures. Difference being that the Soyuz story was kept a big secret, stories were fabricated (that Komarov was alive when the capsule hit back to Earth) but after the Comunism collapse, many archives were made available and some witness begin to come forward with what they knew at the time - and that's what we get to see, through many interviews and moments narrated by actor Elliott Gould.

A lot more than following the early space program from Soviet Union, this one amazes and intrigues audiences with the secrecy establishment from that country, how secrets and stories were created in such an insane and jawdropping manner that one may wonder if the world of cinema imitates them in the movies, or if that system was highly creative in not letting the truth come out. Speaking of movies, the amount of stories shared and the uniqueness of that particular setting was never explored by Hollywood and they're missing out a narrative destined to win some awards. I positively enjoyed this documentary, mostly because it didn't felt like a crazy or absurd exposition of facts - though it could be like that. Considering those Cold War days and the extremities of two superpowers, they could not allow their mistakes to be seen; America was a little more open about this (or at least we're made to believe in that). 8/10.
