Small-budget indie films can indeed be hit or miss - but there are some independent filmmakers whose work is consistently elevated about the usual fare. Kyle Henry is one of those filmmakers. Rogers Park is well-written, well acted and beautifully filmed. It requires a little patience to allow the story to unfold. There is a lot of history to the background of the characters and it takes much of the film's first half to unpack the story. But it is a story that many can relate to - and one that evokes strong emotions. I love how Henry casts "unconventional" actors - actors who have talent more than any physical attribute to entice us into the film and uses that attribute to entice us into the plot. Rogers Park may not be the best film you will ever see in your life - but its solid, thought-provoking, and incredibly realistic. What Henry, scripter Carlos Trevino and cinematographer Drew Xanthopoulos put together here is what makes independent, small budget, modern cinema so worthwhile. When it works, like it does here, you're going to get something you won't find anywhere else... a reflection of real life that isn't always pretty, isn't always perfect and doesn't always go where you thought it might be going. But, like life itself, seems like a worthwhile ride all the same.
