Ewan McGregor and Roger Dale Floyd in Doctor Sleep (2019)

FAQ

Doctor Sleep

Yes. It is based on Stephen King's novel, "Doctor Sleep" about Danny Torrance from "The Shining," and takes place in the same cinematic universe as Kubrick's film.

No, but it is highly recommended. "Doctor Sleep" is set decades after the incidents at the Overlook Hotel depicted in "The Shining". If not, you are less likely to understand the characterisation of Dan, the main character, or the significance of certain events.

This film adheres to the continuity of the 1980 film.

No actor from The Shining reprises his/her role. All the characters from The Shining who appear in this film were re-cast: Jack Torrance, for instance, who was played by Jack Nicholson in the original, is played by Henry Thomas in this film. One actor from The Shining does make an appearance, though: Danny Lloyd, the child actor who played Danny Torrance in The Shining, has a cameo as one of the fathers watching the baseball game, the one in fact who tells Crow Daddy (Zahn McClarnon) that Bradley Trevor (Jacob Tremblay) always hits the ball, as if he could read the pitcher's mind. He is credited simply as "Spectator".

It is the title of Stephen King's novel this is adapted from.
