The early 3D Castlevania problem is very real

Castlevania 64 has ideas I like, but this is exactly where the jump to 3D hurts the series for me. Reinhardt and Carrie are interesting enough, the gothic atmosphere is still there and parts of the castle feel appropriately dark and strange. But actually moving around never feels as natural as it should. The camera and controls make simple platforming much harder than the enemies sometimes do.

There are good moments. The villa has a strong creepy atmosphere, the hedge maze is memorable and the game does try to mix exploration, action and horror instead of just copying the 2D formula. I also like that Reinhardt and Carrie play differently. But too often I am fighting bad camera angles, awkward jumps and depth perception instead of enjoying the level itself.

That is the main reason it never really clicks for me. I can see what Konami was trying to do, and I respect the attempt to bring Castlevania into 3D, but these early 3D games are hard work. The atmosphere carries it further than the mechanics deserve, but I would still take the 2D Castlevania games almost every time.

These stories can take place in entirely fictional worlds or blend fantastical elements with real-world settings.
