The first series was commissioned in 2015, following the success of a pilot in 2014. The pilot was made as part of the Format Labs season, a call out to independent production companies to pitch innovative factual entertainment formats to the Watch channel. A number of ideas were trialled, but Honey I Bought The House was deemed most likely to succeed as a series.
