A rare noir gem - dark, subdued, and strikingly real.

At first, after watching the trailer, I thought the film would follow the familiar trope of a detective falling into a web of love and being destroyed by a femme fatale.

But The Shameless is portrayed from a different angle - it explores the fragile moral boundary within the police profession, a line constantly tested by the filth and corruption of society. As Jae-gon says at the beginning of the film, the most terrifying thing about this job is not dying in the line of duty, but losing the ability to distinguish yourself from the criminals - the moment when you are willing to do anything to catch them, even if it means betraying your own conscience.

With its measured, modulated pacing, the film gently draws viewers into the characters' inner worlds.

I ended up watching the film twice in a row because of how haunting it is - from its evocative soundtrack and artistic cinematography to the mesmerizing performances of Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Nam-gil.

I was particularly captivated by the long shots that follow the characters' movements - both immersive and enigmatic, they subtly capture the characters' emotional states within each moment and setting.

Jeon Do-yeon brings a sense of fragility and irresistible seduction, yet also a firm, unyielding edge to Hye-kyung, while Kim Nam-gil portrays Jae-gon with an aloof, brooding, and jaded presence, marked by a deeply restrained inner conflict. Both have nuanced facial ticks that add much to the calm and insightful dialogue.

It has definitely secured a place on my all-time list of crime films.
