On July 15, 1976, three masked men hijacked a school bus in California (where else?) and buried those on board alive. Apart from the driver and a 14 year old boy, all were young and some were very young. The 14 year old was Michael Marshall who was on the bus that day only due to exceptional circumstances, something to which understandably he attributes a quasi-religious reason.

Nearly four decades on he revisits that terrible day telling his story aided by a dramatic reconstruction. He and the other captives were thrust into a moving box truck at a quarry then left. With the assistance of the driver (who died in 2012) he was able by a superhuman effort to raise the cover and escape. Ed Ray then handed the kids up to him one by one then pulled himself out. The men responsible were as incompetent as they were ruthless and were soon captured. They received heavy sentences, and two are still in prison although they have been provisionally granted parole.
