This movie is like watching a tennis match.

The Returned has a very different plot that catches viewers' attention from the opening scene. Eva was giving birth to twins while her husband, Alex, played by Nevin Tomic, waited. He was told that his wife and daughter died during the delivery, but that his son survived. For the next eight years, Alex mourned the loss of his wife and daughter while Liam, the son, grew up to be a spoiled and indulged child. The wife and daughter, Sarah, miraculously return, but Eva has amnesia, so she doesn't remember her family.

The major portion of the movie is spent with Eva denying that she is related to the Green and Carter families because they mistreat her and Sarah. One by one, the family members decide that Eva is the "dead" daughter/wife/sister/mother who has miraculously returned. Then they each individually decide that she is not Eva. This is where the tennis reference comes in. While watching this, I kept thinking, okay, the confusion of Eva's identity is over, so we can move on to how this happened. But no, the next character went through the same acceptance/denial. The only one who didn't doubt Eva was Alex.

It isn't until the conclusion that Eva regains her memory and the culprit is revealed. This was a well-kept secret throughout the show, so the end was a surprise. It does, however, raise some questions about the sister. Why did she act guilty so early?

While this was an edge-of-the-seat show, the constant back and forth began to wear thin by the end. It is a true statement when Alex says, "We're finally done with this stupid nightmare." This show is riveting and enjoyable. Just be prepared for there to be some repetition of behavior among the characters. If I knew before watching what I know now, I would still watch this movie.
