Imperfect, yet overall a very fun, well done B-movie

I actually don't mind that we're thrown headfirst into the action, without a trace of exposition in sight. It's a breath of fresh air, in a way, maybe not least of all for a B-movie. What slight plot there is in these ninety minutes will get filled in along the way, and that's good enough for me. What is more concerning are some confounding choices made in the scene writing and dialogue, the sequencing, sometimes the direction or cinematography, and even in the audio and sound editing. The accentuation of women's bodies also seems to be a tad tawdry at times, and this is to say nothing of story ideas and themes that have been employed again and again in this genre space. Granted, in no small part all of this is purely in keeping with the style of film-making we expect from second- or third-tier creature features, so I can't look upon 'Island python' with too heavily critical of an eye. Even from the very start, though, there are definitely moments that make one stop and say, "What? Excuse me?"

Then again, no matter how cynical we may be, the fact is that this flick is surprisingly good. Characters are a little more interesting and likable than we tend to suppose of such fare, and the computer-generated imagery perhaps more consistent and of a higher quality by comparison. There are some really nice touches in the direction and cinematography at points - even many of the more indulgent tidbits are a joy - and the cast dependably give it their all to bring this far-fetched tableau to life. The scene writing is quite strong overall, with definite highlights; from stunts and practical effects, to production design, to the music, this is generally well made, and at points even a bit sharp. No, strictly speaking the story isn't anything special, nor the picture at large. But then, anyone who comes across this isn't in it to see "something special." We're here to see a monster movie about giant snakes and people trying to survive the scenario. That's just what we get, as a baseline, and ultimately, it's really enjoyable.

Before all is said and done, however, it actually gets better yet. Every now and again, even the dialogue is kind of bright, and for as questionable as some aspects are early on, I think it's safe to say this finds more strength as the minutes tick by. Above all, the back end more than makes up for any previous perceived weaknesses as it somehow ramps up both the sobriety and the absurdity, and in so doing it reminds of other gleeful larks like 'Godzilla: Final wars,' 'Jason X,' or 'Ghosts of Mars.' There are weak spots in this and that, to be sure, including a couple of strange creative decisions in the ending, and it's hardly as if the title demands to be seen. Yet 'Island python' certainly has no pretenses about being anything it's not, and that it just happens to be a slightly better rendition of a genre we've seen so much of in the past fifteen to twenty years is just a bonus. Sit back, relax, and just enjoy the ride: for those who are open to flicks of this nature, B-movies that never pretend to be anything else yet wholeheartedly lean into it, 'Island python' is a good time, and well worth checking out for something light and irreverent on a lazy day.
