The Caesium-137 accident through the media perspective

A brief but insightful video report presenting the persepctives of local reporters that covered the radiological accident of the Caesium-137 in Goiânia, in 1987. 31 years after the fact of the very first radioactive accident outside of a nuclear facility in the whole world, the veteran members of the press that brought the first news right in the place of the events, from different news outlets and affiliate TV stations of Goiânia, they share stories, memories and facts about that apparently little story that grew bigger and shook the nation to the dangers of radiation and nuclear energy, a year after the tragic images of Chernobyl alarmed the public.

The documentary, made by journalism students, focus on the very first media responders covering the case, so you won't see famous names - unless if you live in the state of Goiás. Interesting to notice that a majority of them were very young (only one was a veteran of decades), and each of them present the dimensions of the accident, and how difficult it was to bring such a story where nobody knew exactly what was going on, the technical aspects of turning into something that people could understand (since no one was specialist in physics and the authorities responsible for providing answers had their own difficult terms to explain everything).

However, the main issue that most audiences feel the need to see and hear has to do with the painful and difficult task to not alarm the public but everybody was alarmed with the dangers of radiation exposure, contamination, prejudice against the victims and survivors, and the fear that the Caesium could be spread to other cities, states and the whole country. Not sure if one can easily agree with the opinions of some of the journalists that they had to bring a massive attention in an almost chaotic way. Different times then and without the input of internet, and anything that was shared, despite verification, was seen as a threatning reality and panic took over those who were ill informed or accept everything.

As Netflix series "Emergência Radioativa" has brought some light about the 1987 accident to a generation that haven't heard about it, despite its heavily fictional and dramatized tone, one thing they showed and I wasn't aware involves the critical decision of burying the nuclear waste in a different municipality. A reporter tells how the press found out about the issue that was kept hidden from the public and the press itself. It's a strangely humored story that could be used in the series instead of the sequence of a reporter following the trucks with the waste. Also absent from the show but told here was the shocking revelation that some testings of the popularion were done with Geiger meter being turned off.

For the time being, this is a very special and interesting project from the point of view of the journalists. I hope that in time we'll get to see the wide reporting from all over Brazil (and the world, if possible, which I know was quite limited, as there's a Swedish/Brazil production that exposed such fact) related with the case and the lessons learned by media and the general public. 8/10.
