The way people or perhaps you yourself (particularly for 2nd generations) view your national history, your cultural heritage, is coloured by its reflection on the silver screen. Sometimes that gets distorted, boxed in to adhere genre conventions, or to serve political beliefs or climates. The Motherload explores this phenomenon in a fun, clever and quippy way, that reminded me of the likes of Chan Is Missing - as in it's truly one of a kind.

The line between home-made high-concept video essays (which more often than not contain some kind of sketch comedy) on YouTube, and your low-budget indie acquired and put out by some smaller distribution company (you more or less trust) has become rather thin nowadays*. Especially when the approach is this unique and done so well, the lines really blur. The end result is something very contemporary (despite the production taking place in, I'm guessing, 2024).

*Which is cool if you're a glass half full kind of person. The medium is catching up! If you have the talent, and have something to say, you have the technology to make it happen. I'm inspired.

The high-concept comedy subgenre features a distinctive and easily understandable premise that grabs the audience's attention. High-concept comedies typically focus on "what if..." scenarios (e.g., what if a lawyer couldn't lie) or "fish out of water" situations (e.g., a tough cop must pose undercover as a kindergarten teacher).

Satires aim to provoke thought, highlight absurdities, and expose hypocrisy by presenting familiar situations in a distorted or exaggerated manner. They entertain while also providing social commentary and encouraging viewers to reflect on the subjects being criticized.

With a cast consisting solely of 2 Vietnamese-American women re-enacting scenes from celebrated Vietnam War films, The Motherload showcases a diasporic reality as the duo searches for what what remains in the rubble. And there are puppets.
