Tiradentes story through a mix of drama, musical and history lesson

A TV Globo special that mix history, dramaturgy and musical all in one piece as it tells the story of military/activist/dentist Tiradentes and his quest for freedom in Brazil during the colonial period in the late 1700's. It's a special destined for children that summarizes the man's history through musical numbers and the presence of a lady (Tânia Alves) who travels three 20th century kids through time to witness Tiradentes journey in Minas Gerais.

Many names from Brazilian popular music make appearances, as themselves and others playing characters, and their musical numbers revolve on acts by Tiradentes, the Portuguese colonialists, and other situation revolving the Incofidência Mineira. We have João Bosco, Gonzaguinha, MPB4, Zizi Possi, Tunai, Milton Nascimento, Beto Guedes, Kleiton & Kledir and others performing the songs from the play written by Lafayette Galvão and Daltony Nóbrega, and a few original songs composed for this piece. The numbers are somewhat curious, but hardly ever of great appeal (the duet between Zizi and Tunai as they play lovers Marilia de Dirceu and Tomás Antonio Gonzaga is quite beautiful; and the humored ones featuring Tânia and the children are a little fun to watch). Milton Nascimento with "Coração de Estudante" is something of a highlight simply because it is a widely popular song.

In the dramatic segments, we have the always reliable Cláudio Cavalcanti in the title role. The whole trajectory of the hero is interesting to watch despite the little screen time given since every sequence is preceded and followed by a musical routine, which turns the whole experience a distracting thing.

Another distraction - and this one more annoying - are the chroma key effects and the countless overimposed images mixing sceneries and characters/musicians. It's very weird looking and goes in nearly everything.

Since this was a product of a different era made for young audiences, the history buffs in the crowd might object to the idealistic portrayal of Tiradentes and the other characters. It's simply a summary of events that avoids showing controversy and the man's horrible fate after being hanged.

Yet I enjoyed it for its quality content and originality. It's a manageable and a different perspective in seeing history and facts, and one can learn a lot, in a didatic and fun manner. 7/10.
