A Fading Man is essentially a three-hander, two men and a woman, all in their sixties. But this film is much better than a play ever could be because of the quality of the cinematography. The superb camera work stays closely focused on the actors. What we see throughout the film are faces, arms, legs, smiles, frowns, small gestures, brief moments of hugging and kissing and even a few minutes of dancing. It is impossible not to be emotionally involved in this domestic drama. All three actors are excellent, most especially the wife. The husband is largely a silent, thoughtful presence, ready to accept his wife's decisions about their complicated domestic life but telling her that there may come a time when he is unable to continue to be so compliant. So there is constant tension in the film. I felt totally part of it, always wondering how I would act if I were to face the same situation (and it could easily have happened to me). A memorable film with a minimal but intelligent script, led with a tight, highly focused directorial hand. In fact this is a small cinematic masterpiece. I loved every minute of it.
