Dutch television offers young upcoming and talented cinematographers a podium and financial support. Since 1998 over a 100 cinema worthy productions (' telefilms') were released on tv. Nuclear Boy is one of the many gems.

Teenager Aike finds it hard to connect with the world around him. It seems easier to do so when streaming his scientific experiments. "Are you ready to blow something up again?" asks his neighbour kid. "Stay away from this nerd" warns another neighbour.

Aike decides to build a nuclear reactor in his shed. And he manages to do so. Sounds familiar? American student David Hahn really did this in 1994. "Based on true events" opens Nuclear Boy. " Except for the bits we made up".

I enjoyed the convincing actors, beautiful photography and lighting, and the quirky clumsiness and humour that oozes from every shot and scene, emphasised by the effectice minimalistic soundtrack.

Nuclear Boy is subtle. I would have appreciated a bit more pace in the second half and a bit more development for main character Aike - so well acted by Guus Blanken. At the same time the movie touches so many interesting issues, that I can fully recommend this Dutch production.

Dutch cinema often combines understated realism with offbeat humor, tackling moral ambiguity and social change. It balances intimate storytelling with bold, sometimes provocative, visual styles. Dutch films combine art-house sensibility with grounded storytelling, reflecting the country's open, yet quietly complex culture.
