One Take, Zero Mercy: Tudor Giurgiu at His Most Breathless

I'll say it without festival diplomacy: this is my favorite film of TIFF 25.

Not because it's "important" - that dreary little word we sometimes use to beat the joy out of cinema - but because it takes an absurdly risky formal gamble, a 65-minute long take, and turns it into something gloriously alive: ironic, sensual, bruising, and, in places, very funny.

It's the kind of film that emotionally wrings you out while still leaving a crooked smile on your face. Not the big laugh of comedy, but that guilty, self-protective laugh you let out when someone is visibly falling apart in front of you and all you can think is: *My God, what a catastrophe. And how beautifully it's shot.*

A bride in free fall

The premise is brutal in the best possible way. Bianca and Victor are about to get married. They stroll along the seaside like a couple who've already moved beyond "what music do you like?" and into "who are we asking to be godparents?" Everything looks like the opening of an ad for coastal domestic bliss.

Then life kicks the door in.

Right before the ceremony, Bianca learns that Victor hasn't just cheated on her - he's gotten another woman pregnant. The revelation doesn't land delicately, like in some tasteful English novel with lace curtains and well-managed fainting. It lands Balkan-style, like a wardrobe being pushed down a staircase. And it hits even harder because Bianca herself has been trying, unsuccessfully, to have a child.

From there, the film becomes the odyssey of a woman forced to drag through the night her rage, humiliation, bridal makeup, pride, and the corpse of a life she thought was already neatly arranged in the shop window.

What's impressive is that Tudor Giurgiu never turns this into TV melodrama or a thesis on The Betrayed Woman. He turns it into something far better: an emotional thriller, a black comedy of manners, and a night journey through a recognizably Romanian universe of relatives, waiters, unsolicited therapy, superstition, and deeply mediocre men.

Three male writers, one very convincing woman

One of the film's biggest surprises is the writing. Tudor Giurgiu, Conrad Mericoffer, and Radu Grigore somehow manage - with three distinctly male pens - to write Bianca with real intuition and emotional intelligence, without collapsing into either "look how empathic we are, we've read two psychology books" territory or a kind of workshop feminism with cosmic wombs and moon tea.

The film is especially sharp when it brushes up against that whole ecosystem of Instagram feminism, reproductive anxiety, New Age femininity, family pressure, and the eternal Romanian question: *what will people say?* Giurgiu doesn't mock women's pain; he mocks the prefabricated ideologies and therapeutic clichés that try to package it into something soothing and marketable.

And that's what makes the film feel so alive. It doesn't unfold in some sterile conceptual universe where everyone speaks like a dissertation. It unfolds in a recognizable Romania where wedding traditions, cabbage rolls, chakra talk, maternal panic, and the urge to dance to Björk can all coexist at the same table.

Andreea Vasile, with nowhere to hide

At the center of all this is Andreea Vasile in a performance so good that polite praise starts to sound insulting. She doesn't "carry" the film. She *is* the film.

Giurgiu shoots her mercilessly: close-ups, extreme close-ups, the camera glued to her face, her eyes, the corner of her mouth, the silences moving across her skin. For an hour, he gives her nowhere to hide - no vanity, no relief, no flattering escape route - and she meets that exposure with almost indecent courage.

What Vasile does so brilliantly is refuse to play suffering as a single note. Bianca isn't just wounded; she's vain, funny, ashamed, furious, exhausted, absurd, and still trying not to lose face while her life detonates around her. It's a performance full of contradictions, which is another way of saying: it feels completely true.

A camera with nerves

In a film built around a 65-minute long take, cinematography isn't decoration - it's the circulatory system. If it fails, the whole thing collapses.

Alexandru Dorobantu's camera is superb precisely because it never feels like a technical flex. It doesn't scream, *please admire how difficult this was*. It breathes with Bianca - badly, anxiously, erratically - like someone trying to survive news that has just cracked their ribcage open.

The long take works not as a stunt, but as emotional duration. There are no shortcuts, no merciful ellipses, no editing that politely spares you the awkward bits. You stay with Bianca in real time, and the result is both intimate and mildly sadistic. The film traps you inside her implosion - which is exactly why it works.

Tragedy, but make it Romanian

One of the film's smartest moves is that it refuses solemnity. Yes, it's about betrayal, infertility, humiliation, and the end of a love story. But it's also a very funny black comedy of manners, because Giurgiu understands a basic truth about this part of the world: tragedy never arrives alone.

It arrives with an aunt asking whether you're still cutting the cake, a friend advising you to "recenter," a mother reminding you that people are talking, and someone demanding to know where the bag of sarmale has gone while your life is turning into rubble.

That coexistence - between private devastation and the almost indecent cheerfulness of everyone else - is one of the film's deepest truths. People keep laughing, drinking, dancing, saying stupid things, believing in omens and life hacks, while someone else is splitting open from the inside. Giurgiu sees this without condescension, and the film is all the better for it.

The Björk dance scene

And then there's the dance scene.

No, let me correct that: then comes the moment where the film stands up, straightens its jacket, and decides to become unforgettable.

Set to Björk, Bianca dances - though "dances" is far too modest a verb. What she does is reclaim her body from the wreckage. It's not a decorative dance, and thankfully it's not some solemn little manifesto about female liberation either. The film is much smarter than that.

It's a sensual insurrection. A body taking back its own territory at the exact moment life has tried to confiscate it.

Conrad Mericoffer's Panda Man drifts through the scene with comic tenderness and a kind of hypnotic gentleness, becoming the strangest and most unexpectedly perfect dance partner imaginable. He doesn't intrude, posture, or try to steal the moment. He dances like someone protecting a fire rather than putting one out.

Without any festival hyperbole, I'd call it one of the most sensual scenes in recent Romanian cinema - not because it's "hot," but because it's alive. It has rage, surrender, absurdity, tenderness, and that rare feeling that sometimes the most erotic gesture available to you is simply reclaiming your own body from the hands of disaster.

Final

Yes, *3 zile în septembrie* is a film about infidelity. But more profoundly, it's a film about the moment when, after smashing every plate inside yourself, you finally look at the shards and see your own face more clearly.

A film about losing not just a man, but a version of yourself.

And if TIFF, at 25, needed a film to hold up a mirror to itself - a film about maturity, lost illusions, chaos turned into form, and suffering turned into style - then this is it.

Tudor Giurgiu feels, here, fully mature as a director: confident in his craft, willing to take risks, and smart enough not to fall in love with his own trick.
