When Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, was forced to resign over allegations that the Church of England had failed to properly investigate allegations of historic child abuse by its members, I actually felt sympathetic: the person in charge is unlikely to know of every trangression, and moreover can (and should) address issues that arise according to proper procedure. And in a sufficiently large organisation it will inevitably be the case that on occasion, things will have happened sufficiently bad as to make that response appear inadequate. But this documentary (in which Welby himself hardly features, but many victims do) has made me rethink. John Symth brutally beat numerous young boys in his charge, and that's not Welby's fault. But hearing the story, it's hard not to see how the culture of charismatic evangelicism (which which Welby was associated) was extremely vulnerable to fostering what was in effect an abusive cult. On one hand, there's little here you won't have heard in other stories eleswhere: most shocking is that when the Church first of Smyth's behaviour, it despatched him to Africa to do the same things there. This was horror hiding in plain sight: the atrocity that one can get away with if one ensures one is sufficiently useful to the cause.
