There are a class of documentaries that merely set out to document a chain of events - and that's fine. However, for a documentary presenting "two sides" to any given story there is, or at least ought to be, a standard; one that determines that; if you are going to present different opinions - the "test of the metal" in what you are presenting lies in your ability to "draw together" and lay the foundation of understanding. Merely providing fodder for different opinions to cement whatever opinion the was held on the onset - does not a great, or even half decent, documentary make.

One Day in Southport (ODiS) does little more than preach to the convinced. It does, indeed, present two sides of the topic - but does so dismally. A fair bet would be that; whatever opinion you had of the tragic event... nothing has changed after watching this documentary. Thus this whole escapade is a massive FAIL.

ODiS is not only rhetorically inadequate when it comes to enlightening "the other sides point of view" it, potentially, fires up any given opinion and further cements any held point of view - exactly what good documentary filmmaking, within the genre, is supposed NOT to do.

Recommendations are, for once, pretty easy; avoid (unless you feel the desire to, once again, be irritated over the stupidity of what "the other idiots" are thinking).
