Amani has to watch her own life lose its value right in front of her. Her husband brings a second wife into the house because she could not give him a son. That is the point where The Vile is strongest for me. Not in the question of whether something supernatural is in the house, but in that humiliation. You are still there, but the place that used to be yours no longer is.

What makes it bitter is that the film understands how deep that cuts. This is not only about jealousy. It is about pride, dignity and the feeling that in your own home you are suddenly judged only by what you could not give. There could have been a really strong film in that for me, because there is real pain in it. Something that does not feel invented, but hurts right away.

It still never fully got me. I understood what the film wanted to say, but I was never really inside it. It built too little real tension for me and in the end it did too little with what is inside Amani. The idea felt stronger to me than the film itself. What stays is mostly that one bitter line: "Hope to be a happy family Zahra."
