The film embarks on an exciting journey to the lakes of the Alps and the northern Alpine foothills - and repeatedly delves into mysterious underwater worlds: from Lake Frillensee, Germany's coldest bathing lake in eastern Upper Bavaria, to the mighty Lake Constance with its unfathomable depths. Frogmen with underwater cameras and a new type of underwater drone have captured unique images on numerous dives in local lakes - from hidden animal kingdoms to surprising evidence of human civilization. Much of this has never been shown in a film like this before. The documentary also presents the deepest point at almost all of the lakes visited - some are more than 250 meters deep. The film tells how the featured lakes were formed and relates the bodies of water to the landscapes in which they are embedded. Above all, however, the focus is on the geological and zoological peculiarities of the individual lakes - presented in self-contained stories: the miraculous crabs in a lake that sometimes disappears. Or the sulfur-eaters that give some lakes a purple hue overnight. There's also the breeding and nursery of mighty pike, brightly colored sticklebacks, and the mysterious burbot, a cod-like fish that has lived in our deep, clean lakes since the Ice Age.
