Piet tells about the time the ship passed Spider Island, which lives up to to its name as the eight-legged critters abound on and around it. Berend suffering from arachnophobia, the mates played a nasty prank on him by dangling a fake spider on his fishing rod. Having seen trough that, Berend very boldly disposes bare-handed of another giant spider on deck, ignoring it's real.

Piet tells about a dark night when he was sleeping alone in his cabin. He froze with fear and screamed when he saw the shape of a pirate with raised sword, but didn't move. The noise attracted a crew-mate, who found no assailant. It turns out it was just the shadow of Piet's own pirate uniform on his wooden cloths rack.

Piet tells about the time the ship visited Paradijseiland, according to its name an island paradise. Only Steven remained uneasily attentive while the his shipmates had a blast and fall asleep, satisfied but exhausted from feasting. At night, Steven must wake them at the approach of a huge monster, just in time to flee back aboard.

Piet tells about the time the ship visited a friendly island, where he and the mates relaxed on the beach while Berend ventured into the forest, happily foraging amidst flowers and song birds. But panic struck when Berend noticed it was getting dark and he was lost, now scared by any sound or shadow. Luckily, what looked like monster eyes were just lanterns held by Steven, as the mates each went out searching for the cook.

After Piet reads to the crew about a ghost from the great pirates book of horror stories, Berend and Steven shiver, so he and Stien make fun of them rather meanly. Later, it's their turn to get scared of a mysterious intruder aboard at sea, seemingly a ghost, who turns out to be a cunning comeuppance ploy.
