January and Mae were supposed to have a third party: April. Unfortunately an actress had to drop out at the last minute, and scenes and lines were divided between the two actresses. The car interrogation between Oscar and Mae was originally intended for the role of April.
Original inspirations for the script included the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne and the idea of the structure of the monster movie: most notably Frankenstein.
