Maine baked bean suppers are a traditional, community-focused Saturday night meal, often hosted in church basements, grange halls, or town community centers. These, often low-cost, gatherings feature slow-cooked, molasses-sweetened beans, homemade brown bread, coleslaw, and pies. Many events are held as fundraisers, such as those in West Lubec and Scarborough.
During the pandemic of 2020, Executive Producer Liz Tuccillo spent time with friends in Portland, Maine. As part of her background research for the series, she visited a village called Corea within the town of Gouldsboro, near Acadia National Park. One of the persons she ran into was a retired nursing professor who fished for lobsters out of Corea Harbor for decades, called Jean Symonds, who passed away in 2025, on whom Annie Potts character is based, Aunt Sarah. On a side note, there were two other interesting anectodes based on the town. One was the "village doc" , who rented a home, and turned the downstairs into an office, and the other was a pair of innkeepers, who had a pet pig.
Auto-brewery syndrome, also called gut fermentation syndrome, is a rare condition in which your gut produces alcohol spontaneously. The Board is composed of the local stakeholders, such as shopkeepers, school principals, bankers, and government officials, of which the prospective candidate will be serving, and the purpose of these interviews is to determine the match fitness to meet the needs of its residents. These panels tend to be found in more rural areas of the country, where there more challenges to find candidates who are willing to make a long-term commitment to what some might consider a isolated"hardship posting".
