During the time that the Northern Territory had legalised euthanasia, three people died through physician assisted suicide. The first of these was to be Max Bell, a terminally ill cab driver from Broken Hill. Max Bell did drive his cab from Broken Hill to Darwin to complete the procedure, but no specialist doctor would provide the required confirmation. Max returned home to Broken Hill and died "a natural death" in hospital. Bob Dent, a local Darwin man, became the first to die under the new law the following month.

The Northern Territory passed it's euthanasia laws in 1995. One year later the NT Parliament tried to repeal the bill, but it was defeated.
Eventually the bill was over written by The Euthanasia Act 1997, a Federal Government bill.
The football coach is played by Brian Taylor, an ex-footballer and television sports commentator. His voice is also heard on the television when Polly is in Rex's house with her relatives. So Brian Taylor appears in the film twice - firstly as the football coach and then as himself commenting on an football match being played in Victoria.
