Mainland Low-Budget Action Cinema Finds Its Market as a New Generation Carves Its Own Path

Along with Ashton Chen (Shi Xiaolong), Xie Miao is perhaps one of the most recognizable child martial arts stars in modern Chinese cinema. Having transitioned into adulthood, both continue to anchor action projects; however, due to market realities, most of their output consists of direct-to-streaming web movies or mid-to-low-budget productions. The Xie Miao-led Fight Against Evil franchise is hardly a mega-budget blockbuster series, but reaching its third installment proves there is a viable, profitable market for it, along with solid word of mouth. It serves as a decent warm-up for Xie ahead of his starring role in the international big-budget action feature Eye for an Eye.

Having jumped straight into Fight Against Evil 3 without catching the first two entries (which I caught up on later), I experienced no barrier to entry regarding the narrative. At its core, this is a straightforward cop-and-robber actioner: Xie Miao plays a sharp detective returning to his hometown for his wedding, only to discover that a local girl he knows has been abducted by a human trafficking ring. Driven by a righteous streak, he launches an investigation that triggers a series of brutal altercations.

Many viewers might assume that contemporary mainland action cinema merely copies the blueprint of 1980s and 90s Hong Kong cinema, given the familiar tropes and frequent inclusion of Hong Kong talent or stunt coordinators. In reality, mainland action filmmaking has quietly developed its own distinct ecosystem in recent years. The cast and crew here, including the action choreography team, are predominantly mainland talent. While some may have trained under Hong Kong action directors, they have come into their own, establishing a style that sits quite far from traditional Hong Kong action aesthetics. For instance, last year's Tony Jaa vehicle Striking Rescue felt more akin to a Thai Ong-Bak martial arts flick than a domestic production. Meanwhile, Fight Against Evil 3 takes stylistic cues from South Korean crime-action cinema, most notably Don Lee's The Roundhouse (The Outlaws) series, echoing its visual textures, blocking, dark humor, and even its portrayal of low-level mob henchmen.

Styles aside, the ultimate draw for audiences remains the action choreography itself. On that front, Xie Miao's martial arts prowess remains genuinely impressive. While budget constraints and action design experience lead to uneven execution, the standout sequence arrives mid-film: a tense, inventive brawl in a dark room between Xie Miao and a villainous couple played by Huang Miyi and her co-star, which leaves you thoroughly on the edge of your seat. Unfortunately, the remaining group fights, and the final clash between Xie Miao and Philip Ng, feel somewhat formulaic and rushed, which is a bit disappointing. Still, with Donnie Yen continuing to perform past 60, the 40-something Xie Miao remains in his physical prime with plenty of runway left to prove himself.

Regarding Philip Ng, despite his breakout popularity in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, he seems to lack sustained follow-up momentum. Coupled with the steady decline of Hong Kong action film production, seeing him relegated to guest roles in mid-to-small-scale mainland action movies is somewhat disheartening. It underscores why finding successors for Hong Kong action cinema is so difficult today; when seasoned performers like Ng struggle to land top-tier leading roles, how can newcomers hope to rise?

A noteworthy aspect of the script is how it handles its criminal organization theme without resorting to the unwritten industry rule of setting the story in Southeast Asia. Regular viewers of recent mainland crime cinema know that, unless a film is explicitly set in a past era, such as the 1990s bandit flick Caught in Time, most modern organized crime plots are arbitrarily relocated to a fictionalized Southeast Asian setting to bypass censorship. It is intriguing that Fight Against Evil 3 explicitly tackles a human trafficking syndicate on domestic soil without fleeing to Southeast Asia. Whether this was enabled by official backing from public security authorities or other behind-the-scenes factors remains a point of curiosity; readers with insight are welcome to weigh in.

As a crime-action film, Fight Against Evil 3 is solid if unspectacular, a serviceable popcorn flick that fulfills its genre duties without delivering major surprises. Ultimately, the standout performer isn't Xie Miao or Philip Ng, but actress Huang Miyi. Possessing a slight resemblance to Zhou Xun, Huang reportedly lacks a formal martial arts background, yet delivers an intense, high-flying physical performance that completely steals her scenes.
