110 gallons of stage blood were used in the apocalyptic finale.
Several elements of the cursed backstory of the fictional town of Blackwood Falls are loosely based on local legends and ghost stories from the area the film was filmed. In particular, the stone steps that descend to a void in the forest, the drownings of several children at Blackwood Pond (actually Scarcliffe Pond), and the details of the decomposed corpse found in the woods are all based on actual events in that area.
The inspiration for the story came from a nightmare of writer/director David Hinds.
