In the United States, "Justify My Love" peaked at number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It also topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play charts and peaked at number 42 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The RIAA certified it platinum on February 22, 1991 for sales of over a million units. On 1991's Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart "Justify My Love" was allocated the number 21 spot.
The video and song initially caused mass controversy in much of the Old World, in countries like Sweden, Denmark, Spain, and the UK. It was originally banned, but re-rated R18, due to it being such an adult video, by the UK and the Schengen Ratings Advisory Board, such as in Sweden and Denmark. Years later, it was re-rated 18 on appeal.
Madonna, and this very cute video of her's, was an inspiration for the movie Body of Evidence (1993), in which Madonna plays a suspect accused of the death of her lover, through rough sex.
