Highly radioactive nuclear waste must be stored deep underground for at least a million years and survive wars, floods, and ice ages. But many local politicians and those affected say: "Not here!" What will happen to the highly radioactive nuclear waste? The highly radioactive legacy is the spent fuel rods from nuclear power plants. For decades, they have been stored in so-called Castor containers - but these will soon become a problem themselves because they are only approved for 40 years. But it will take much longer until the final repository deep underground is completed.
