Any color that is - although as the title suggest it is the darker kind that is front and center here. Now language wise it works in English as well as German ... since sheep are white by nature, any other color feels off.

In the saying it is used for people who are different. Mostly there is a negative connotation or ring to calling people that. I am not going into any other meaning this may have ... let's just call the people here outcasts ... they are weird, they are strange ... they are not really part of the "civil society" (at least they would not count themselves as anything close to that - and no one else would call them or include them) ... that said, the actors involved really do have fun with their respective roles ... and it is fun to watch ... to a degree ... and you have to suspend your disbelief ... a lot.
