This video documentary covers the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) first global conferences on human development at the International Exposition of Rural Development, which took place in New Delhi in 1984, and their plans of improving poor rural communities plagued by famine and diseases around the world.

Academy Award winner Sir Richard Attenborough (director of "Gandhi", "Cry Freedom") is the host of the special, presenting the social and economical challenges faced by communities in Africa, Peru and India that didn't have the needed basic resources of food, water and health, which caused millions of deaths. Though a sad and tragic reality of many decades it was only in the 1980's that the world has started to pay attention to such calamities and many initiatives, like this one, co-sponsored with some United Nations agencies, were started and entered into our collective consciousness. We follow the tragic and painful images, but later on we begin to witness some of the results brought by world specialists during the conferences and their efforts in helping those poor communities by developing sanitation systems, water distribution, construction of wells, plantantion and other projects.

It's a good documentary, though it's hard to know how many people saw it back in 1984 and/or the result of such efforts in the long run, except that those conferences and similars emerged ever since, leaving their mark and improving the quality of life of many people out there. The sad part of it seeing it now, 40 years later, is that despite countless of social/technological advances the problem of hunger, water distribution, food and health resources hasn't changed all that much. There's never enough efforts and money for such causes. I mean, the money exists alright but it's mostly wasted to causes that are pointless (billionaires space travel endeavours) and harmful (weapons and war technology). One can't escape of such preachy thinking but it's a fact, it happens everywhere if you can't see it or try to avoid it. It's part of mankind's backyard ever since the dawn of men, and looking up to the moon or Mars or another planet as a potential place to live is not gonna help anyone. At least not the ones who'll stay behind. A film like this makes us remember that we're still have more eminent issues to be solved. 9/10.
