Sun Ra was a gifted musician, composer, and philosopher. His output was varied and prolific during his lifetime. Having seen him and his band perform just once (several years prior to his 1993 death), I was taken away by the vibrant energy and unity of Sun Ra and his ensemble. It didn't hurt that I attended the event with some admirable experimental jazz players who were also mesmerized by the impactful concert.

This film offers important highlights of Sun Ra's early years, his artistic development, and his unique point of view. Along the way, we're introduced to some of his longstanding musicians and a dancer who were inspired by this charismatic leader who challenged them to reach their potential. The scholars, authors, and musicians interviewed share meaningful insights about this man who was dedicated to the transformative power of music. If I have anything critical to say, it's that this film felt about 15 minutes too long, but that does not diminish its positive qualities.
