It seems that on each and every day of the first 100 days so far of his second term, President Donald Trump has made headlines in some way, usually with some executive order on policy, his political appointments or even just a general announcement either to the media or to Congress. The point is made by one of the various contributors to this Channel 4 documentary that for his first term in 2017, his chaotic first 100 days in power then were born of an unpreparedness as he hadn't expected to win the election. This time, confident of ultimate victory he has a definite plan and knows how to implement it, the question is, will it succeed in, to coin his phrase, making America great again.

This hour-long programme with three ad-breaks conveniently focused on four of his main policy strands. Firstly, his tariff policy which has so disrupted the global financial markets, secondly his policy on immigration, in particular, border control, thirdly, his foreign policy with particular reference to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.and lastly his domestic policy aimed at cutting the cost of central government, principally involving the abolition of the Department of Education as well as rolling back the social changes which favoured minorities, in effect revoking "wokism".

Presented by Matt Frei, it also touched on his controversial statements on acquiring Canada as the 51st state of America, "getting" Greenland and changing the constitution to enable him to run for a third term and didn't even mention his freeing of most of the Capitol Building rioters of January 2021.

The programne lined up commentators both pro and anti-Trump with Frei adding his somewhat partial UK-centric overview from a bench outside the White House. I have my own opinions from afar on Trump and his doings but putting these to one side, I thought the programme was well-edited and did a good job of reflecting just how much this transactional President has torn up the rule book.

One can only wonder by these massive shifts to American policy, just how much he will transform politics around the world as we now see a swing to the right and a surge in populism in so many other countries. Even in his personal comportment as Head of State, with his headstrong, combative style, his use of vulgar language and lack of manners, remembering in particular his very public debasement of President Zelensky at the White House, he is radically changing the very concept of how a President is seen to conduct themselves.

One thing is for sure, the next three and a half years will be every bit, in fact probably even more tempestuous than his first term.

To paraphrase Bette Davis in "All About Eve", better strap yourself in, it's clearly going to be a bumpy ride.
