Streaming Stars, Then and Now

Natsumi, a former government bureaucrat, now lives in his rural hometown in an aging farmhouse. Every morning he prepares breakfast for three people-himself, his mother, and his younger brother Tomoaki-though neither of them ever appears. As a kettle screams on the stove, Natsumi becomes increasingly tense, scanning the house for hidden microphones he believes have been planted by government agents.

Outside in his eggplant field, he talks to Tomoaki as if he were standing beside him, warning that "the surveillance is getting bolder." When his wristwatch ticks strangely, he smashes it, convinced it contains a listening device. A sound in the shed startles him, but it turns out to be Nakazumi, a local restaurant owner. Nakazumi asks if Natsumi can provide vegetables for a community cooking event. Natsumi's replies drift between lucidity and paranoia-rants about incompetent politicians, the collapse of the system he once served, and a belief that unknown forces want to silence him.

Voices of villagers chatting nearby suddenly twist in Natsumi's perception into accusations that he is a danger to national security. Terrified and furious, he storms out with a sickle, driving them away.

That night, noises echo through his house. He searches frantically, hears knocking on the window, and when the disconnected landline rings, he answers. Nakazumi's voice warns, "Don't open the door," before the call abruptly ends.

The next morning Natsumi cooks eggplants and visits the mountain shrine Buzenbo. Behind the shrine, Nakazumi is preparing dishes for local farmers. He offers Natsumi eggplant dengaku, which Natsumi eats. But when crows begin cawing, their cries twist in his mind into warnings: "Be careful of the eggplants." Panic rises. Natsumi collapses, insisting the food is poisoned and begging for his mother and brother not to eat it.

Nakazumi gently sits him down and tells him something Natsumi refuses to accept: "Natsumi... your mother and Tomoaki aren't here. They've been gone for years."

Natsumi denies it with desperation. He runs home, searching room to room for his family. In the hallway he finds two fallen memorial portraits. Breakfast for two sits untouched on the table. The silence in the house is overwhelming.

Still refusing the truth, Natsumi runs into the forest, Nakazumi's voice echoing in his head-sometimes beside him, sometimes from nowhere. At dusk, as fireflies fill the path, Natsumi briefly sees his mother and Tomoaki again within his mind. Their presence brings both relief and sorrow.

Then the figures vanish.

Standing alone among the fireflies, Natsumi hears Nakazumi's final words, fading like a memory he may or may not accept:

"Whatever form it takes... live."

Natsumi walks deeper into the glowing path, suspended between delusion and the broken reality waiting for him.
