Robert Musil's unfinished modernist novel, The Man Without Qualities, was published in multiple volumes between 1930 and 1943. It is a massive "story of ideas" set in Vienna before World War I, featuring a protagonist named Ulrich who struggles with identity and purpose. The short film is a modern, separate work and not an adaptation of Musil's novel although likely is inspired by the themes of identity.
