Alesia and the battles that raged around it are often considered to be the finest military exploits in the career of Julius Caesar. After a prolonged campaign, he succeeded in forcing Vercingetorix and about 60,000 men to defend the fortified hilltop town of Alesia.

In the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, the Viscount Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese Army besieged the city's French garrison under General of Brigade Jean Léonard Barrié. After two breaches were blasted in the walls by British heavy artillery, the fortress was successfully stormed on the evening of 19 January 1812.

The siege of Leningrad was a prolonged military blockade undertaken from the south by the Army Group North of Nazi Germany against the Soviet city of Leningrad on the Eastern Front in World War II.

Troops from Scotland started to besiege Newark from the north while Parliamentarian forces did the same from the south. The garrison aggressively defended the town and during a harsh winter the Scots built up siege works manned by 16,000 men.

The Siege of Petersburg, Virginia, was the beginning of the end for the Confederates in the American Civil War. Petersburg was a key city close to the Confederate Capital of Richmond. Taking Petersburg would clear the way for the Union North to assault Richmond, and also cut off critical key supply lines that fed the efforts of the South.

The siege of Verdun was the longest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France. By 29 March, French artillery on the west bank had begun a constant bombardment of German positions on the east bank, which caused many German infantry casualties.
