Before filming, director Suzannah Herbert spent a month and a half in the city of Natchez, immersing herself in the culture and connecting through the community's social circles. She met the Reverend Tracy Collins at the visitor's center, and he recruited her into his van tour to explore the less transparent history of slavery in the region. Collins and many of the other people she met made it into this documentary.
