From the most absolute honesty, my prior interest in the figure of Leiva was practically nonexistent. He is not a musical artist who has accompanied any moment of my life. Neither his music had caught my attention, nor had his story awakened any curiosity in me. For that reason, when I decided to watch this documentary, I did it more out of discipline than enthusiasm. The fact that the film was nominated for the Premios Goya in the category of Best Documentary Film was reason enough to give it that opportunity that is sometimes so difficult to grant.

What I like most about this documentary is that it knows exactly what it wants to be and how to be it. Throughout its hour and a half runtime, the prevailing feeling is that of a well-constructed experience, comfortable in its own place, one that does not try to impress through excess but rather through closeness. Although that closeness works only to a certain extent, because it will probably have a stronger effect on those who are already more connected to the artist.

A large part of the merit behind my positive reaction lies in the editing. It allows the narrative to move forward with fluidity, avoiding stagnation or repetition. It prevents boredom from appearing at any point. In addition, the film develops a striking style when assembling images, testimonies, and intimate moments. It seems to pursue an aesthetic that I would describe as somewhat "underground," yet without ever losing professionalism in its execution. It is a mixture that works surprisingly well. It invites me to observe from the inside, to almost experience it firsthand. And it nearly succeeds.

That stylistic decision is almost entirely what manages to hold my interest in what is being told. Beyond the music, what truly emerges in the documentary is the portrait of someone deeply committed to his craft. There is something comforting in watching a person live their work with such dedication and intensity. Even without sharing his enthusiasm, it becomes inevitable to perceive the strength of the bond between the artist and his art. And interestingly enough, that has been the greatest effect the film has had on me. Days after watching it, I still do not feel any particular urge to listen to his music, but my perception of him as a creator has certainly changed.

Another element that helps me connect as a viewer is the human way in which difficulties, efforts, and vulnerabilities are portrayed. Without falling into the role of victimhood, the film allows glimpses of moments in which the artist faces his own limitations. It carries a certain sadness, a quiet melancholy. Yet it never feels like a sadness designed to manipulate the viewer. Rather, it emerges naturally, almost as an inevitable consequence.

The duration might seem like a minor detail, but knowing when to stop is one of the film's greatest strengths. It lasts exactly as long as it needs to. No more, no less. The result is a pleasant balance that avoids both saturation and dryness.

In the end, it is a very solid film, aware of what it is telling and of its own virtues. It does not aim to be grand or revolutionary, yet it succeeds in being sincere and entertaining at the same time. Without relying on big artifices, it manages to bring me into its world-its way of thinking, creating, and feeling.

And if it worked for someone like me, who started from complete indifference, I can easily imagine the emotional impact it may have on fans. For them, it will probably feel like a way of getting even closer to the voice they have been listening to for years.
