  • This is a dramatic chain of events in the most glamorous ,swinging era of Hindi films... the 1960s. It was a decade when film stars tasted success and carried their larger than life screen image on to real life with unbridled pomp and splendour. It was during this time that two ambitious films were made... Ujwal Nirmal Sheetal and Reena Mera Naam. The latter became a runaway hit while the former was struggling at the box office.
    —Official Agent
  • Ravi Kumar, a successful actor from the South, is signed up for a movie opposite Zahra Fernandes, a very ambitious actress who has a career rivalry with another actress Chandni. They are both signed up for separate films with 2 different directors. While Zahra's Nirmal Sheetal etc. flops at the box office due to some under-the-table machinations by the director of the other film, the best actress award goes to Zahra. At the post-awards night, Zahra falls from a high-up balcony, and the police swing into action. The film has many other actors, all possible suspects, and revealing more would expose the plot.

Synopsis

  • In December 1968, two actresses, Zara Peter Fernandes (Sonali Raut) and Chandni Raza Roy (Zoya Afroz), are both set to make their film debut on the same date. Zara is an accomplished actress, but Chandni is a talented newcomer from Dehradun. Before their Bollywood debuts, Chandni and Zara used to share a room with Mrs. D'Silva (Kanika Dang). Zara hated Chandni. Before coming to Bollywood, Zara had a few Bengali movies to her name.

Bobby Chadha (Ashwin Dhar) is the director of Chandni's film "Reena Mera Naam". Chandni refused to expose for Bobby because she loves Virman (Nakul Vaid). Virman is the actor in Zara's film "Ujjwal Nirmal Sheetal" and is Chandni's ex-boyfriend. But when Virman takes her for granted, Chandni decides to take the film & Virman breaks up with Chandni. Chandni gives a bold performance in the movie and wears all the bikinis that Bobby asks her to. Zara and Chandni are both vying for the title of "sex symbol of the nation", with their respective movies.

Subba Prasad (Anant Mahadevan) is the producer / director of Zara's film. Subba used to work in the South film industry before coming to Bollywood and he brought Ravi into the movie. Ravi is from Gorakhpur in UP. Ravi happens to be an ex-cop, who was sacked from his job as a police officer after shooting a parliamentarian in custody. The MP was insulting Ravi and wanted him to lick his boots, so Ravi entered the lock-up and shot him instead. Subba gives Ravi a break in movies to cash in on his media exposure. Ravi becomes major sensation in the films from the South of India due to his "hero" attitude. When Subba come to Bollywood, he brings Ravi along with him.

Ravi is now an actor, who happens to have his Bollywood debut in the same film as Zara (the one directed by Subba Prasad). Ravi is also Bobby's stepbrother, but both step bothers keep this a secret from the world. Ravi had met Chandni when he rescued her from the burning sets of her movie in the same film studios. Chandni was trapped inside a blazing building and everyone else was running out. Ravi puts his own life on the line, enters the burning building and rescues Chandni. Ravi falls in love with Chandni but maintains his distance from her as he believes that Chandni is still with Virman.

Subba and Bobby's film release on the same date. Bobby fights dirty, he spreads rumors that in one scene Virman has hit Ravi (who is a south Indian superstar), so everyone in south boycotts it. Plus, he asks his bookies (headed by Alec D'Costa (Irrfan Khan)) to black Subba's movie for cheap, thereby turning audiences away (thinking the movie is crap). Bobby's film is a hit and Subba flops. Ravi threatens Bobby on phone. Chandni's film becomes a box office success, whereas Zara's film is a flop. Against this backdrop, everyone heads to the awards function one night.

Zara wins the best actress award, but people still throng to Chandni for her autograph. Chandni's success angers Zara who believes she is higher and better than every other new actress. At the after party, Zara tries to seduce Ravi, but Ravi remains loyal to Chandni. When Bobby insults Chandni, Ravi takes Bobby aside and gives him a good beating outside the building (when nobody was around). Zara starts an argument with Chandni after an awards party, when Zara suggests to Chandni that she would have an affair with Ravi Kumar. Chandni and Zara have a fight in front of the entire audience. Things get physical and the 2 women have to separated by Bobby who intervenes. Later that night, Zara is found dead, apparently having jumped from the terrace of the building.

Chandni's lover, Ravi Kumar (Himesh Reshammiya), decides to step in and find the real murderer to save his love. Inspector Raj Grover (Rajesh Sharma) tells Ravi that the way Zara's dead was found, it was clear that she did not fall from the terrace, but was pushed. So, it could not be suicide, but murder. The blame obviously goes towards Chandni, and she has no way to prove her innocence.

The suspect list in the murder is extremely high, there is Virman, who is Chandni's ex-boyfriend, Subba Prasad who is Zara's film director and KD/Kenny Damania (Yo Yo Honey Singh), a music director who had an affair with Zara (KD was also selling the same tunes to both Subba and Bobby), as well as many other suspects. Zara was angry with KD for using their affair to get cheap publicity in the media. D'Silva was also getting sex clients for Zara for Rs 100,000 per night.

In the end, it finally turns out that after Zara & Chandni's fight, Zara went up to the terrace where she met KD (hinting that their affair was still going on at the time of her death) and as the two got together, KD's wife Shabnam (Jesse Randhawa) started looking for KD.

KD heard Shabnam coming up to the terrace, so tried to run away, and accidentally pushed Zara away from him, which led to her to fall from the terrace. It also turns out that after falling down, she landed outside Subba Prasad's window. Subba decided to let her fall so her death could gain attention and maybe help their flop film be successful.

KD & Subba are arrested. KD is imprisoned for 7 years and Subba Prasad is given life sentence. After all the supposed suspects leave the court, Chandni confesses to her love for Ravi. The two get together, and Ravi tells Chandni that actually, he knew that she was the one who murdered Zara. In a flashback, it is revealed that after Subba let Zara fall down, she was still alive and was found by Chandni. Chandni was so frustrated and annoyed by her that she hit Zara on the head with a glass bottle, finally killing her. Ravi decides to keep this a secret between him and Chandni, and the two walk off.
