In 2010, the band recorded a new version titled "Gabi und Klaus 2.0" for the compilation "Es war nicht alles schlechte" (It Wasn't All Bad). For the album "Krone der Schöpfung" (2021), the band re-recorded the song as a duet with German singer "Mine."
The song is about heartbreak, from the perspective of Gabi and Klaus, who blame each other for their breakup. They both sing their frustrations out in the rain.
The song was written by "Prinzen" member Sebastian Krumbiegel, and produced by Annette Humpe and Armand Volker.
"Gabi und Klaus" was released as Prinzen's debut single on Hansa Records in 1991. It was released as a 2-track CD and 7" single with an a cappella version as the B-side. On September 9, 1991, the song was released as part of Prinzen's debut album, Das Leben ist böse.
The song was the breakthrough of the band. It was also one of the first successes of East German art and culture in reunified Germany and the beginning of a significant career in the German-speaking world.
