At approximately 29:24, when Sawyer bends down to tend the fire, the action was unscripted. The production had been having trouble keeping the fire lit during filming, so the actor genuinely added more wood to the fire during the take in order to keep it burning for the scene.
When Sawyer swings the axe at the Axe Man during the fight scene, the prop accidentally makes contact with the actor. His brief step backward and slight smile/laugh afterward are genuine reactions to being hit, and the moment was kept in the finished film.
At approximately 30:42, Sawyer slamming the blanket onto the floor was not originally scripted. The production liked the moment so much that several additional takes were filmed to capture it.
At approximately 17:50, some of the rain heard in the background is real. It was raining outside while the scene was being filmed, so the production used a mixture of the location rain audio and added sound effects. Although the rain itself is never visible on camera, the overcast conditions also helped create the lighting and atmosphere seen in the scene.
When Sawyer pulls out the derringer, the scene was originally planned to lead into a fight sequence. The fight was later removed from the script because of production costs, though the idea could potentially be revisited in a sequel.
